Transformative Recreation

Program

Transformative Recreation

Chess, game nights, First Fridays, culture. Recreation we design and run ourselves, built to desegregate how people gather inside San Quentin.

A prison yard sorts itself, by race, by affiliation, and by role. Transformative Recreation was built by residents to interrupt that: weekly chess and monthly First Fridays where the tables mix, and correctional officers, incarcerated people, and outside visitors play the same games at the same table.

Play is one of the few states in which the nervous system lowers its guard while cooperating with strangers. Games generate friction, a misread rule, an unlucky roll, and repairing it together, round after round, is the point.

UC Irvine’s Games + Learning + Society Center is studying what all of this does. In 2025, 887 people put in roughly 4,435 hours of it.

Our goal

Interrupt how a prison yard sorts itself. Recreation designed and run by residents, where correctional officers, incarcerated people, and outside visitors play the same games at the same table, built to rebuild trust across the lines the yard draws.

What we did

Weekly chess and monthly First Friday game nights, designed and run by residents rather than outside staff. The tables mix by design: officers, incarcerated people, and outside visitors in the same games. UC Irvine’s Games + Learning + Society Center is partnering with us to study what all of this does.
